The purpose of this research is to assess daylight performance of buildings with climatic responsive envelopes with complex geometry that integrates shading devices in the façade. To this end two case studies are chosen due to their complex geometries and integrated daylight devices. The effect of different parameters of the daylight devices is analysed through Climate base daylight metrics (CBDM).
Since its first participation in a Universal Exhibition (Philadelphia in 1876), Mexico has always delivered an impressive pavilion that captures the imagination. The fundamental theme of Expo Milano 2015 is sustainability, being as much a driving principle for feeding the world’s population, as a criteria for architectural design, in terms of eco-friendly materials, ease …
As the name implies, Lamina is a laminated constructed staircase, chiefly using plywood. Using the inherit strength of this material, the gently curved underside of the cantilevered treads blend gracefully into the vertical balusters.
The kinetic sculpture aptly named Pulse adorns the atrium of d3´s Core 4 building. Suspended in the skylight, Pulse brings the entire space to life. Inspired by the pulse of human heart when in motion, at first the individual elements disperse throughout the atrium, imitating the glass-making sands when scattered on the ground.
In this parametric design video inspired by the beauty of lines and patterns of origami folds, I created a few models using 3Ds max and printed them on a 3D printer.
This thesis asks if and how we can design spaces of everyday life that not only satisfy a basic thermal need but also encourage occupant participation in the shaping of microclimates, promote thermally-based social cohesion, and do so using only on passive means.
The Computational Design program takes a computer science view of design, applying both the science and art of computing to design problems, in relation to creation, presentation, analysis, evaluation, interaction or aesthetic expression; in real and imagined applications, both perceived and conceived.
This is a simple step by step instruction of how to build the Dune shelf.
Through the use of parametric scripting various panelized surface formations, panel configurations and patterns were studied for the facade. Ultimately, three profiled perforated metal panels were cut and broken into varying surface conditions and gradated onto the facade.
A parametric design for Metamaterials. Metamaterial Mechanisms is a research project from the Hasso Plattner Institute.A metamaterial is a material engineered to have a property that is not found in nature.
The fluid geometric form is articulated as a series of alternating CNC milled birch plywood ribs which are pre-fabricated into modular units and spray finished with a clear lacquer. These units are hung on a series of z-clips bolted to the interior wall, and held in place by self-weight.
ArboSkin is a Bioplastic Façade Research Project developed at ITKE (Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design) ,Institution that has many years of experience in teaching and research in the fields of computer based design, simulation, and production of cladding for buildings with complex geometries.
Diffusion Choir is a kinetic sculpture that uses 400 folding elements to reveal the movements of an invisible flock of birds. Its movements are always changing, driven by custom software running a flocking algorithm.
This thesis deals with the development of a tool intended for automatic optimization of point support distribution for plate and shell structures. In an architectural context point supported plate or shell constellations are typically represented by doubly-spanning, in situ concrete systems carried by columns.
Over the last few months we’ve been publishing short movies about shape-shifting architecture on our Facebook page. Here are ten of the best including parametric design projects with sliding walls, kinetic facades and rotating houses.
The United Arab Emirates pavilion at the 2015 Milan Expo opened today. Bringing the planning principles of the traditional desert city to Milan, the pavilion’s interior of self-shaded streets evokes the experience of the UAE’s ancient communities, while demonstrating the natural energy efficiency of their compact urban form. The Parametric Designed facade of the Randall museum is amazing. the sculpture installation on the wall of the Randall Museum in Corona Heights, San Francisco rotates with the wind and gives the building a dynamic look!
In this parametric design video find out how we are using the BigRep ONE to 3D Print large scale furniture in one piece. Our 3D Designer Beatrice Müller is using the BigRep ONE to 3D Print Large Furniture, almost in one piece, only adding the padding afterwards. Firms across industries use BigRep’s large-format industrial 3D printer technology to reduce costs, develop better products and get to market quicker.
This bridge was produced using 3D concrete printing technology by Ghent University in collaboration with Vertico. The design and production of a topology-optimized prestressed concrete bridge is presented. Topology optimization (TO) is a mathematical method that optimizes material layout within a given design space
This is a video about bridging parametric design with craft through algorithmic modularity. The digital design space, unlimited by its virtual freedom, differs from traditional craft, which is bounded by a fixed set of given materials.
In the next decade or so, the widespread adoption of robotics is set to transform the construction industry
In this parametric design video you can see a model designed by Matthias Danzmayr for a kinetic facade.
The Moses Mabhida Stadium by GMP Architekten is located in a sporting precinct in Durban on the shore of the Indian ocean and features a 105-metre arch that rises over the circular stadium. The arch is connected by cable system to the external edges of the roof, carrying the weight of the roof’s inner membrane.
